Point Defence

Point-defence systems are designed to defend a target, typically a starship or planetside firebase, from incoming projectiles. It is distinct from target jamming, which throws the incoming threat off course; and shields and armour, which simply absorb the impact of the projectile. Instead, point defence systems seek to intercept and destroy incoming threats before they reach their target. Given the difficulty of intercepting an already fast moving target, most point defence systems utilise some form of laser in order to instantaneously destroy a target once a lock on has been acquired. Given the level of complexity point defence represents, it is a system which is typically controlled by some form of advanced program or in the case of very large scale point defence systems an Artificial Intelligence.
