Sentient Life

Sentient life, and sentience in general, is a term used to describe species (and potentially machines) which have evolved to a point of so called 'higher intelligence'. Although an exact definition of sentience is something that has never been fully agreed upon, the term is generally accepted to refer to species which are self aware, intelligent, and often possess some degree of creativity. Suffice to say, the term is typically used as a means of separating intelligent life from basic wildlife.

Although sentient life is in itself a large distinction from all other life in the universe, further distinctions can be made. These usually involve categorising sentient species by their level of cultural, scientific, and technological advancement. While this can lead to a multi-tiered system of categorisation, the most important distinct to be made is between 'Advanced' species and 'Primitive' species.
